A rivalry that lasted 73 years has finally come to an end. Friday, Sept. 22 marked the final time the Lions football team would line up against the Casady Cyclones, who are moving to a new conference next year.
The teams first met in 1950 and have faced off 51 times since then.
“They were a founding member of the SPC along with St. Mark’s,” Head Coach Harry Flaherty said. “It’s been a few years since we’ve played them, but obviously there’s a lot of history and tradition with them.”
After scheduling difficulties early in the season, Flaherty made the decision to add the Cyclones to the schedule for one last time.
“We knew they were independent for the time being and games like that can hold a lot of meaning, and a lot of history,” Flaherty said.
Throughout the game, the Lions were plagued with injuries, losing key players like senior tight end Baker Long and senior wide receiver Lucas Blumenthal.
Even though the Lions suffered a 21-29 loss, giving them a record of 3-2 on the season, the Lions have a better head-to-head record against the Cyclones.
