After a hot start to the season, the varsity basketball team is now prepared for the Southern Preparatory Conference (SPC) counter season, which started Jan. 14 against Cistercian. After a rocky start to the season, the team comes into the counter season on a roll, winning 15 out of their last 17 games and the Dallas ISD Holiday Invitational Tournament. Senior captain Luke Laczkowski is confident about the team heading forward.
“I feel now, especially after winning the DISD tournament, that we have good momentum heading into the counter season,” Laczkowski said. “We had a bit of a break with the ice, but I think we set a good foundation with the tournament we played.”
Although every game during the counter season is crucial, the Jan. 17 game at home versus Greenhill is set to be one of the most anticipated games this season. Last year’s game was a tight 87-83 overtime win for the Lions.
“The Greenhill game last year was a ton of fun, and luckily we have them at home again this season,” Laczkowski said. “Sadly it won’t be in the new gym, but honestly I feel like it might be better for us because we’re used to (Spencer Gym).”
Basketball is hoping to play a few games in the new Zierk Athletic Center at the Hicks Gymnasium. The team is scheduled to host Trinity Valley on Jan. 22 in the new facilities.
“We’re looking forward to the first game in the new gym,” Laczkowski said. “And then we have a big one against ESD, sadly it’s on a Tuesday night.”
After the counter season, the team will finish the season with the SPC tournament in mid February.
“I’m looking forward to the SPC tournament here in Fort Worth,” Laczkowski said.
