On August 11, 2025, the U.S was at a standstill as President Trump declared a crime emergency in the nation’s capital: Washington D.C.
President Trump deployed approximately 800 National Guard troops, including those from D.C. by invoking Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act. This article, also known as the “Emergency Control of Police” allows the president to direct the Mayor of the capital to provide police services for federal purposes when the President determines the time is appropriate.
Along with the National Guard, other federal agencies such as the FBI and ICE began to increase their presence in the capital.
Since the deployment of troops, there has been a lot of social backlash including a poll from the Washington Post that determined around 80 percent of 604 adult residents in D.C. opposed the takeover.
After the deployment of troops in D.C., the President has urged for more takeovers such as the one in the capital. He claims that cities such as Chicago and New York are likely to follow.
