On Sept. 8, 2025, the Nepalese government placed a ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. This ban came as an effort from the Nepalese government to subdue the organization of online protests against the government, which had already been under a lot of criticism by its people concerning corruption.
What followed was a wide movement from the Nepalese people, mainly the youth, to oppose the social media ban. The protests began to escalate on Sept. 9 as thousands of protesters barged into the Federal Parliament located in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu.
As a result of the violent outrages, there have been multiple reports of more than 72 deaths and at least 2,113 injured, according to news outlet Reuters.
After the protests and the crisis in the parliament, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli decided to resign. Former Supreme Court Judge Shushila Karki became the appointed interim prime minister on Sept. 12, 2025, at least until the March 2026 elections.
