Donald Trump was elected as the 47th president In the early hours Nov. 6 after defeating Kamala Harris. Returning to the office after being voted out in 2020, he joins Grover Cleveland as the only other president to serve two separate terms. Trump is the first Republican to win both the electoral college and popular vote since George W. Bush in 2004.
On campus, the results of the election have caused mixed reactions, but Director of Inclusion, Diversity, and Human Resources Lorre Allen thinks it’s important for the community to come together regardless of the outcome.
“I think we will go back and rely on the things that we know about us as a community, about us at St. Mark’s,” Allen said. “That we extend grace. We assume best intentions. And, if we lead our hearts and care about the people around us, I think we can get through anything together.”
Campus is buzzing with conversations related to the election, so Allen emphasizes the importance of upholding the standards of civil discourse
“The election is done, the votes have been counted,” Allen said. “And we need to get through any fallout together and we need to be respectful of each other. This is why we have a democracy, this is why every voice should be heard and every vote counted. It’s because that’s who we are, and we don’t shy away from that. We need to remember what we all adhere to as part of the St. Mark’s community.”
