Renowned speaker and activist Katie Koestner spoke to juniors and seniors on March 6 about rape and sexual assault and what students should avoid, or do when faced with difficult situations. Speaking from her own experience as the first victim of date rape in the 1990s, she illustrated how seemingly-harmless situations can quickly devolve, warning students from making assumptions regarding consent. She urged Marksmen to take action and be upstanders whenever possible.
Her talk also served as a follow-up from previous speaker Ryan Travia’s talk on alcohol, with Koestner emphasizing the involvement of drugs and alcohol in the vast majority of sexual assaults. She also answered a variety of questions from students at the end.
