The school had a special guest on Tuesday morning in a convocation celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Former President George W. Bush attended Spring Convocation on April 21, surprising all of the students and faculty in attendance. After opening remarks by Headmaster David Dini and an address by Dr. John Perryman, Dini introduced the 43rd president, who entered the Great Hall to a standing ovation. Bush then took the podium and spoke for about five minutes about the significance of the nation’s milestone.
“I was blessed to represent this country,” Bush said. “I will always be honored to carry this title that means more to me than any other – citizen of the United States.”
Bush began his speech by discussing George Washington’s leadership before reading a few excerpts from an essay he wrote to commemorate the anniversary.
Afterward, Dini presented Bush with a Resolution of Gratitude on behalf of the St. Mark’s community. After the Middle School choir sang the National Anthem, Bush exited the convocation to another series of applause.
The United States will celebrate its 250th anniversary in July.
